Among other tweets, the Connecticut Democrat echoed singer-actress Bette Midler and other Twitter followers in mocking Trump's ill-fitting tuxedo.
Midler, later conceding the tirade had degraded into a '"Battle of the Bulge," called Trump's formal wear a "PROPORTION FAIL!!"
President Trump was mocked on Twitter for his bulging formal wear during a state banquet at Buckingham Palace.
Trump attended the lavish event hosted by Queen Elizabeth II with First Lady Melania Trump, who wore a Dior Haute Couture gown.
Midler, a frequent Trump critic, tweeted: “His white waistcoat is at least two inches too long; tailcoat is supposed to be almost the same length as the waistcoat beneath, sleeves should be shorter and show a bit of the cuff below, waist itself is nipped in...what a figure he cuts! Fire the tailor!!”
Trump offered a middle-of-the-night Twitter retort.
"She got caught, just like the Fake News Media gets caught,'' Trump wrote about Midler, before calling her "a sick scammer!"
Sen. Murphy wondered why Trump was on Twitter in the wee hours of the morning, tweeting: "It's 1:30am his time. He's calling Bette Middler (sic) a psycho."
In another tweet, Murphy took a swipe at the American president's support for Brexit, noting the potential negative impact on relations with Europe.
"I don't care what Trump looks like in tails," Murphy wrote. "What I care about is how monumentally stupid it is for Trump to be cheerleading Brexit. . ."
"There is no way to confront an expansionist Russia and a rising China without the United States and a strong, united Europe working together" Murphy said.
On Sunday, Trump said he would support the United Kingdom, leaving the European Union without a Brexit deal if U.K. officials can't reach an agreement with EU leaders.
"If they don’t get what they want, I would walk away,” Trump told Britain's Sunday Times.
Murphy also rebuked Trump over Saudi Arabian arms sales without Congressional approval, a move criticized by top Republicans who vowed to reverse it, as reported here by the Los Angeles Times.
